Formed in 2010, The Good Excuses write music much like a six year old dresses himself. Four unusual people excited by the freedom they have to write varying degrees of unusual music. With their debut release entitled "Binge Thinking," vocalists/guitarists Andrew Thompson and Jim Gullifer, bassist Adam Sheehan, and drummer Jeff Matthews have fully absorbed influences ranging from one genre of music to other genres. Some of those genres are unexpectedly dissimilar with their own sound. Rock music is a big one.
They are engineering the record themselves.
"We had no where to play so we just said screw it, built our own studio and started recording ourselves," says Thompson. "It took a while to learn how to do it from scratch so we're putting out these first five songs because of some time constraints." "We didn't want to cut any corners with this. We've all done that before and it never works," Gullifer added while ironing his pants. "So, you know, we just put a few microphones in the room and recorded all the songs like that. We like it when it sounds raw, like some slob humans made it, and a lot of that happened unintentionally." Having influences like Nirvana, the Dead Milkmen, and the Pixies is a pretty good starting point for a sound. "Getting these songs finished and released will feel amazing. I keep meaning to do it but they are on an unlabeled CD in a pile of blank CD's and there's a lot to look through. But don't write that in your bio thing, if they found out," Adam mumbled, "I don't even know what."
With the lush vocal harmonies featured in "When In Rome" and "Fowards Walkin' Man" alongside the out-of-control shouts of madness in "Mr. Rutherford", it's hard to tell if Thompson and Gullifer are some voice-having weirdos in a band or if the microphone just happened to be on while they went off, in key, about something or other.
